A fishing charter is a chance to see Rarotonga from beyond the reef and spend a morning or a full day on the ocean. The best fit depends on your group, your fishing style and how much time you want aboard—not simply the lowest headline price.
This guide compares eight Rarotonga charter operators, with public contact details, Google ratings and published rates where available. Operators are listed alphabetically, without a ranking. This is a researched starting list rather than a claim to cover every fishing guide on the island.

What does the price include?
- Akura Fishing Charters: Gear, bait, sandwiches and water. Shared-trip minimums: 3 on a 24ft boat; 4 on Akura. Public-holiday surcharge.
- Extreme Fishing Charters: Gear, bait, water and lunch or light refreshments. GT night fishing is a separate 3-hour product; ask for its rate.
- Into the Blue Rarotonga Charters: Current homepage specialises in private sport fishing. Rates vary with season; confirm duration, passengers and inclusions.
- Marlin Queen Fishing Charters: Tackle, light lunch and water. Ask which boat is allocated; confirm the 6-person bracket and capacity directly.
- Raro Fishing Charters: Gear and light snacks. Its pages differ on drinks: confirm drinking water, drinks and final capacity when booking.
- Reelaxing Fishing Charters: Light snacks on half-days; meals on full-days. Transfers can be arranged; ask about any charge.
- Te Moana Fishing Charters: Captain, gear, water and light snack; deckhand on Teata. Boat allocation and passenger limits affect the quote.
- Wahoo Fishing Charters: Food, chilled water, 2 crew and fishing equipment. Confirm the exact party-size rate.
Compare the same trip: four adults on Akura’s published 24ft private option would pay $1,100 in total ($275 each), versus $1,200 for four $300 shared places. That is an arithmetic example using the advertised capacity and rates; confirm the actual boat, trip length and final quote before choosing. A private trip can suit a group even when its total looks higher than a single shared seat.
The six operators with a published shared price in this table advertise $250–$300 per person. Trip lengths differ, so that range is not a like-for-like quality ranking. Extreme requests a quote, while Into the Blue’s current homepage focuses on private trips. Marlin Queen’s pages overlap at the six-angler price bracket; Reelaxing’s page gives two half-day private durations. Both are flagged above so you can clarify them directly.

What fish can you catch in Rarotonga?
The main offshore game-fishing targets are yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, wahoo and blue marlin. A standard trolling charter may encounter several of these species. Tell the skipper if one is your priority, because the fishing method and recent bite matter as well as the month.

Yellowfin tuna
Recognise the streamlined body and bright yellow fins and finlets. One of the tuna species targeted on offshore charters.

Mahi-mahi
Also called dolphinfish or dorado. Its green-blue and gold colouring is distinctive; dolphinfish is a fish, not a dolphin.

Wahoo
A long, narrow fish with dark vertical bars. A key species to ask about when planning a cooler-season fishing trip.

Blue marlin
The long bill and dark blue back make this billfish easy to recognise. Ask the crew specifically about marlin opportunities.

This broad month guide follows Extreme Fishing Charters’ local season information, checked 20 October 2026. Skippers may describe different peak windows, so ask what has been caught recently rather than treating the calendar as a promise.
| Fish | Usual stronger period | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Yellowfin tuna | December–April | Can be caught year-round. Ask about early or late departures. |
| Mahi-mahi | December–April | Present year-round; peak months are an operator guide, not a fixed limit. |
| Wahoo | May–September | A cooler-season target; ask the skipper about an early-morning start. |
| Blue marlin | November–March | Discuss current billfish reports and the crew’s target species before booking. |
Other possibilities: smaller skipjack tuna may also be encountered. Dogtooth tuna and giant trevally (GT) feature in local fishing, but a specialist GT, jigging or other targeted trip can differ from a shared offshore trolling charter. Confirm the species and technique with the operator.
A season is not a catch guarantee. Weather, water conditions and the day’s feeding activity affect the trip. Tell the skipper what you hope to catch and stay flexible about the plan. The illustrations help identify the main species; they are not photographs of a promised catch and are not shown to scale.

Choose your fishing style before you book
For a general game-fishing outing, ask about trolling and the species the crew is targeting on your dates. If you specifically want GT topwater, night fishing, jigging or bottom fishing, say so before booking: a shared game-fishing place may not include that technique. Specialist tackle and private-charter requirements can differ. Catching a particular species—or any fish—is never guaranteed.

Ask about comfort, weather and the catch
Confirm the departure harbour, meeting time, shade, seating, toilet availability and boarding arrangements for the actual boat. Tell the operator about children, mobility needs and your group’s experience. Check suitable lifejackets, the safety briefing and who makes the weather decision. Leave a spare day if you can, and read the cancellation, rescheduling and refund terms before paying.
Ask how fishing turns are shared, whether non-anglers count towards capacity, and what happens to the catch. Several operators offer a filleted portion rather than ownership of the whole fish. Confirm what you can take away and arrange refrigeration or a restaurant preparation service separately.
Before heading to the harbour
Bring sun protection, sunglasses, a light rain layer and any food or drinks your operator asks you to supply. Keep your phone protected from spray. If you are prone to seasickness, speak to a pharmacist or health professional about suitable options before your trip. Follow the skipper’s directions and respect local fishing restrictions and protected areas.
